Power outage incidents, while rare, do occur causing interruption of drilling rig sites operations and services. Mezintel Depth tracking systems have been subject to such scenarios resulting in lost connectivity and lost calibration.
However, once power returns, there is a way to quickly recover saved calibration table and Here’s how to do that:
STEP 1: Wait for power to re-turn
Once power returns, be sure that the PC can connect to the Depth Tracking System. Once connected verify that the calibration status says ‘Not Calibrated’. See Fig 1.
STEP 2: Re-Cover Calibration Table
Assuming that the Depth Tracking System was properly calibrated for the current job, then this means that the calibration table is stored on the PC that performed the calibration.
Therefore, us that same PC to go through the usual calibration procedure, but this time, once you reach the Encoder calibration page (See Fig 2) click on the link that says:
Re-Calibrate Using Stored Cal Data.
Fig 2. On the above screen click the link ‘Re-Calib Using Latest Cal Data’.
Once that link is pressed, the following dialog will result which requires input for the height between the traveling block and the rig floor. Be sure to measure and enter the correct height of block as shown in the illustration of Fig 3.
Fig 3. Entering block height from bottom of rig floor
Alternatively, you can move the traveling block to the bottom rig floor and enter a height of zero (0).
Once the Height is entered, click <Next> and send the calibration table to the remote data acquisition system, just like you would do under a normal calibration session. Once this is done the Depth Tracking System will change the Calibration status to ‘Calibrated’ and will show the current block position. From here you are ready to continue using the system.
NOTE:
This procedure is provided to save time so that users do not have to do the 3 or 5 stage calibration procedure. However this quick re-calibration procedure will only work if the following is true:
- System was calibrated before and worked for a while at the same rig site
- A piece of the traveling block cable was not cut to remove a worn segment of cable.
